Inner Ear May Play Role In SIDS Deaths
A study suggests inner ear damage may play a role in hampering the breathing of some babies who died from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
Doctors examining 31 deaths found newborns who later died from SIDS shared the same hearing test results, CBS News reported Tuesday.
The scores, reflecting inner ear function, were significantly lower in the right ear than in the left, something not usually seen in healthy babies, said Dr. Daniel Rubens of the Seattle Children's Hospital Research Institute and the study's lead author.
"I'm suggesting that the inner ear plays a key role in the control of breathing," said Rubens, noting he suspects damage to the inner ear, possibly at birth, can fatally impair a child's ability to breathe normally.
SIDS researcher Dr. Henry Krous said parents should continue to follow steps proven to reduce the risk of SIDS, which kills more than 2,000 babies in the United States each year.
"Put babies on firm surfaces for sleeping," Krous said. "They should be placed on their back, they should not be overly swaddled." (c) UPI
